Bringing the Irish language to the championships

The Irish Language Committee organised a series of Gaelic activities throughout the All-Ireland Championships, encouraging dancers, teachers, and families to engage with Ireland's native tongue — whether through a friendly challenge or learning the national anthem.

'Cúpla Focal' Challenges

Throughout the championships, participants were invited to take part in informal Irish-language challenges — using a cúpla focal (a few words) in everyday conversation around the venue. The initiative aimed to spark curiosity and pride in the language among the Irish dance community, from beginners to fluent speakers.

Greet in Irish

Try a simple "Dia dhuit" (hello) or "Go raibh maith agat" (thank you) when meeting fellow dancers and officials.

Learn a phrase

Pick up a new Irish phrase each day of the competition and share it with your dance school group.

Spread the word

Encourage friends and teammates to use Irish words during warm-ups, at practice areas, and backstage.

The Oireachtas Rince na hEireann 2023 marked a significant chapter in the history of Irish dance, as the world championships found a new home in Montreal, Canada. This move brought the competition to North American shores for the first time, creating an opportunity for dancers and families from across the globe to gather in a fresh setting. Hosted under the authority of An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha, the event maintained the same rigorous standards and celebratory spirit that have defined the championships for generations. The transition to Montreal reflected the growing international reach of Irish dance, welcoming participants from Ireland, North America, and beyond to compete on a world stage.

Throughout the championships, the Irish Language Committee organised a thoughtful programme of Gaelic activities designed to bring the native tongue of Ireland into the heart of the competition. Dancers, teachers, and families were encouraged to engage with the language through friendly challenges and cultural moments woven into the event schedule. These activities served as a reminder that Irish dance and the Irish language are deeply intertwined traditions, each enriching the other. Participants found themselves learning phrases, songs, and even the national anthem, creating connections that extended far beyond the competition floor and into the broader cultural heritage that the championships seek to honour and preserve.

The gathering in Montreal brought together thousands of dancers from around the world, creating a vibrant community united by a shared passion for Irish dance. Families travelled long distances to support their young competitors, filling the venues with energy and encouragement. The championships provided a rare opportunity for dancers who typically train in isolation to meet their peers from other countries, exchange experiences, and form friendships that last well beyond the event itself. For many participants, the journey to Montreal was as meaningful as the competition, offering a chance to explore a new city while celebrating the traditions that have shaped their lives and their art.

An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha has long served as the governing body for Irish dance worldwide, setting standards and organising championships that bring the community together. The 2023 event in Montreal represented a bold step forward, demonstrating the organisation's commitment to expanding the reach of Irish dance while maintaining the integrity of its traditions. The move to Canada was carefully planned to ensure that dancers from all regions could participate fully, with accommodations made for travel and scheduling. This championship embodied the spirit of growth and adaptation, proving that Irish dance can thrive in new environments while remaining deeply rooted in its cultural origins.

Amhrán na bhFiann — The National Anthem

Lyrics for the Irish national anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann (The Soldier's Song), were made available to all attendees. Dancers and spectators were encouraged to join in when the anthem was performed at official ceremonies during the championships.

The anthem was sung in its original Irish-language version, honouring the cultural roots of the competition and the heritage shared by the global Irish dance community.
